Port Otago Orders Ten Hybrid Straddle Carriers

Sixty-tonne machines stacking four-high with twin-lift spreaders, delivered with every module of the fleet management system — the telemetry is part of the purchase, not an upsell.

Port Otago in New Zealand has ordered ten Konecranes Noell hybrid-powered straddle carriers, announced on 2 September. Each machine lifts 60 tonnes and stacks containers four-high, with four driven wheels per unit and twin-lift spreaders that handle either two twenty-foot containers or one forty-foot. The order was booked in June 2026 with a delivery deadline of the end of August 2027.

The detail worth noticing is not the machines but what came with them: the complete Konecranes Noell Fleet Management System with all available modules, giving telemetry and operational data across the whole fleet. Buying every module at the point of order, rather than adding analytics later when a problem has already appeared, is the pattern that separates fleets whose data is useful from fleets whose data is a retrofit.

That matters more for straddle carriers than for most container-handling equipment, because they are the hardest-worked machines in a terminal that uses them. A straddle carrier drives, lifts, stacks and shuttles continuously across a shift, its duty cycle varies with vessel schedules rather than any fixed pattern, and its maintenance costs are dominated by wear items whose consumption depends on how it is driven. Fleet telemetry across ten machines gives a terminal the comparison that makes that visible — the same task, the same yard, different consumption, and a reason to look at why.

The hybrid drive is the other half of the economics. Straddle carriers spend a large fraction of their duty cycle decelerating and lowering loads, both of which return energy that a purely diesel machine dissipates as heat. A hybrid driveline captures it and reuses it on the next lift, which is why the fuel case for hybridisation is stronger in container handling than in most heavy vehicles.

Port Otago's Strategic Projects Manager, Kevin Kearney, said the port needed a solution combining high-performance equipment, advanced fleet management and strong local support — a list in which the third item is doing quiet work, since a fleet of ten machines at a regional port has no redundancy to spare while waiting for a part or a specialist. Konecranes sales director Peter Kania framed the package as higher productivity and lower total cost of ownership.
