A Platinum Mine Moves Its OT Network to EtherNet/IP

Mimosa Mine in Zimbabwe spent three years migrating legacy OT networks, adding segmentation and controlled access — a migration shaped by conditions that make mining the hardest place to do it.

Rockwell Automation announced on 1 September that Mimosa Mine, a platinum-group and base metals operation in Zimbabwe's Midlands Province, has completed a phase of OT network security and modernisation work carried out with Mine Elect, a Zimbabwe-based Rockwell specialty distributor.

The timeline is the first thing worth noting. Dr Blessing Mahomva, managing director of Mine Elect, said the transformation began more than three years ago with an upgrade of key OT infrastructure that migrated the mine's legacy OT networks to EtherNet/IP. Three years is not slow for this kind of work; it is roughly what it takes when the plant cannot stop. The scope covered strengthening the network architecture, improving security segmentation, and establishing more secure mechanisms for system access, data transfer, monitoring and recovery — which is the standard list, executed under non-standard constraints.

Rockwell names those constraints directly: legacy systems, harsh physical conditions, safety-critical processes and limited downtime windows, with IT/OT convergence increasing cyber exposure. Mining concentrates all of them. Underground and processing plant equipment runs continuously because the economics do not tolerate idle capacity, so migration windows are short and infrequent. Conditions are abrasive, wet and vibrating, which shortens the life of connectors, cabinets and anything with a fan. Distances are long and the infrastructure is often decades old, installed in phases by different contractors. And a good deal of the equipment is safety-related, so changes carry a validation burden beyond the technical work.

Migrating from legacy fieldbus to EtherNet/IP in that environment is what makes the security work possible rather than being the security work itself. Segmentation, monitored access paths and recovery mechanisms all assume a network that can be addressed, monitored and segmented in the first place; the older serial and proprietary layers underneath most brownfield mines cannot express those ideas at all. That sequencing — modernise the transport, then apply the controls — is the pattern most brownfield operators end up following, whether or not they planned it that way.

The local delivery point is also worth registering. Mine Elect provided engineering, implementation and onsite support locally, which in remote operations is frequently the difference between a system that stays configured and one that drifts back to whatever works. Rodrick Naidoo, Rockwell's country director for English-speaking Africa, and Lloyd Shamu, head of technical services at Mimosa Mining Company, are quoted on the collaboration.
